Tires: Tire replacement, wheel drive vehicles, all wheel drive vehicles

Question
My son ran over a bolt and the tire appears to be ruined. I just purchased the tire less than a year ago with less than 4K miles on the set. The set are Potenza 215-55R16-93V. I found a replacement tire on Craigslist (brand new) that is a Goodyear Eagle 21-55R16-93H. If I purchase this tire, will it be okay to mix the V and H (3 to 1) on the vehicle? If so, where should the H be installed?

Answer
Jan,

Obviously the best situation is 4 identical tires - meaning same size, brand, tire line, and speed rating.  The further away from that you are, the more likely there is to be problems.

You didn't tell me what kind of vehicle you have, but same All Wheel Drive vehicles are sensitive to differences in tire diameter - so an odd tire might cause drivetrain issues.

But even if you have a FWD or a RWD, the problem is that vehicles tend to pivot around odd tires in emergency situations - and you won't know you have a problem until that situations arises.

You not only have different speed rating, but different brands as well.  This MIGHT work, but it might not.  I'd suggest you find something closer - and put that odd tire on the front.
