Tires: Wheels, dodge ram 1500, duty wheels

Question
Hello,

I need to know if there is a way to take a 5 lug Dodge ram 1500 23" wheel and somehow put them on a Chevy if the lugs are different.  Like, if the chevy has 6 lugs, is there some kind of adapter that would enable the 5 lug wheel to fit?

Answer
Rashad,

There are a couple of issues here.

First is that the number of lugs used on hubs is designed to prevent folks from mixing light duty (meaning low load carrying capacity) wheels with medium duty and heavy duty wheels.  Clearly no one would want a light duty wheel where are heavy duty is called for.  Wheel failures can result in very bad accidents.

So adapting 5 lugs wheels to 6 lug or 8 lug vehicles is a very bad idea.

Second is that it has been found that adaptors seem to cause more problems than they solve.  They prevent the tire/wheel assembly from being properly centered on the bearings and that causes not only the bearings to fail, but also results in unusual tire wear.

That's a long way of saying: No. There isn't a good way to get a wheel with a different bolt pattern to mate up properly.  Wheels need to have the proper bolt circle and offset.
