Tires: Tire Selection, ford f 150 lariat, ford f 150

Question
QUESTION: Hey David,
I own a Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4 5.4 engine.  I am looking new tires and have my selection down to the Michlin LTX A/T2.  I have the SL and the E for options on load capacity.  I generally drive 80 miles a day, mostly highway, and then some city.  I live in WI, where we have lots of snow during our winter months.  I do not generally haul heavy loads or tow a camper, etc.  But I am having a hard time deciding if i should get the standard load or E?  My biggest concern is traction in the bad weather during my long drive to and from work.  Would the E or tires set for a higher load capacity give me better traction?

Thank you for your help

ANSWER: Dear Ryan,
In order to give you an answer, I'd first like to know the model year of your Ford F-150, and the original tire size that came on it.  I'll be waiting for your response.
Thank you,
DT

QUESTION: 275/65/18 2006 Ford F-150.  Original tires were Goodyear Wranger AT/S

Thanks

Answer
Dear Ryan,
I see no merit to getting the LT275/65R18 vs. the P275/65R18 unless you intend to do some heavy hauling.  Here is a comparison of the load capacities:
P275/65R18: 2,367 lbs. per tire at 35 psi (max.)
LT275/65R18 Load Range 'C': 2,535 lbs. per tire at 50 psi (max.)
Generally speaking, lower air pressures would work better in snow and the P275s would require 35 psi front and rear according to my data, vs. 40 front and rear for the LT275s.  Your tire information door placard and owner's manual will confirm this.
You will also get somewhat of a smoother ride out of the P275s due to the lower air pressure.
As the tread design is the same for both the P and LT version of the Michelin LTX A/T2, I don't expect that there would be any measurable difference in snow traction.
I've checked the consumer ratings/evaluations for this tire on one web site and it appears that you've made a good choice:
