Tires: Replacement tires for 2005 AWD Toyota Sienna, size designation, replacement tires

Question
QUESTION: The run-flat tires on the 2005 AWD Toyota Sienna are 225 60/17, and I was sold a set of non run-flat snow tires that are 215 60/17.  I don't mind the non run-flat; I'll get a full sized spare and keep it in the back.  However, I'm concerned these tires are not the right size and may not be safe, and/or, may damage my vehicle.

ANSWER: Dear Peter,
Thank you for using AllExperts!
This seems like an unusual move on the part of the tire installer as my records show no such optional tire size for the Sienna AWD, and I'm sure your owner's manual does not permit it.
I show the load index of your original tires as '98' (max. load 1,653 lbs. at 35 psi).  I am concerned if the snow tires mounted on your Sienna have a lower load rating, but need you to check them for me as their rating depends on several factors.  Please look at the sidewall for the size designation: either P215/60R17 (might not be a 'P'), and at the end of the size designation there will be a number such as:
95 or 96, or possibly 100.  Let me know what that number is.  I'll be waiting...

QUESTION: The full tire info is: 215/60R17 96 Q M+S.  They are General Altimax Arctic tires, with a max load of 1565 lbs, described as "Standard" load tires. -Peter

Answer
Dear Peter,
Sorry for a delay...I was out this afternoon. Thank you for the information; this confirms my suspicions.  These 215/60R17 tires are under-sized and under-load rated for your vehicle and are not suitable.  They should be removed and replaced with the exact size tire and load rating hat came with your vehicle. The original tires on your vehicle provide 1,653 lbs load capacity per tire at 35 psi (your door placard pressure).  As you indicated (above) the 215/60 tires only carry 1,565 lbs per tire (at 36 psi)...not enough.
Let me know if you require further assistance.
