Tires: Nissa Sentra Tire Problems, high performance tires, high performance cars

Question
I have replaced complete set of tires twice, now have to get two more tires, was told by tire dealer that because of the high performance sports car tires are good for 15 to 20000 miles, is this possible or are there other problems that can be fixed, cannot afford to get tire every 6 months, total mileage on car now 60500 miles.

Answer
Sarah,

High performance cars get some of their high performance from the tires - they grip!  In order to get that grip, some sacrifices have to be made - and those sacrifices come from treadwear and rolling resistance.

It's not a given that all high performance tires have this type of compromise, but it is a given that in order to maintain that level of grip, something has to be sacrificed.

So you can get high performance tires (as defined by their speed rating) with improved levels of treadwear, but that requires a loss of ultimate grip.

So if your expectations are that you want tires that wear better, you have to be willing to give up the grip.

UTQG ratings (Uniform Tire Quality Grading) have 3 indicators:

Treadwear - as indicated by a number, the higher the number, the better the tread wear.

Wet Traction - as indicated by a letter, the closer to A, the higher the wet grip. (with the highest level being AA)

Temperature - as indicated by a letter, with A being the highest.  However, the temperature grade is closely aligned with the speed rating.

So you want to go from - say - 260 AA A to 440 A A.  Careful selection of tires can pay benefits here.  Just be aware that there is a price to be paid.
