Tires: Tire size, rim width, risk of failure

Question
QUESTION: My Class A MH has 275/80R 22.5 Load Range H tires 16 ply
I am being told that 295/75R 22.5 load range H  16 ply -- are a sutible substitute.
Is this true?

also I have always been told that MH tire should be replaced every 7 years is this true -- if not what should I look for on the tires to tell when they need tobe replaced?

ANSWER: Vince,

A 275/80R22.5 Load Range H has an overall diameter of 39.8", is 10.9" wide on a 8.25" rim, and has a load carrying capacity of 6610# at 120 psi (single) and has an allowable rim width range of 7.50" to 8.25".

A 295/75R22.5 has an overall diameter of 39.9", is 11.7" wide on a 9" rim, and has a load carrying capacity of 6610# at 120 psi (single), and has an allowable rim wide range of 8.25" to 9.00".

So if the rims are 8.25" and there is room for 1/4" more width )and there probably is, then this swap is OK

Recent bulletins from the tire industry indicate that tires degrade simply due to time.  The age of a tire is important even if the tire is unused.  There some disagreement over how to best express this age limitation, but my take is:

If you live in a hot climate (AZ, CA, NV, TX, and FL) then the limit is six years.  If you live in a cold climate (MN, ND, WI, MT, etc), then the limit is 10 years.  States in between are  ..... ah ........ in between.

QUESTION: Is it possible to go to load range "G" with a 275/80R 22.5 14ply.
Is it legal and if so -- What are the trade offs?
Thank you, Vince

Answer
Vince,

If your vehicle came with Load Range H, then it is quite likely that you NEED Load Range H for load carrying capacity reasons.  This is something that the vehicle manufacturer has to determine.

The tradeoffs?  Overloading a tire increases the risk of failure.
