Tires: Tire selection for 1970 Dodge Motor Home, tire shops, tire selection

Question
Barry, The tires in question are 7.50x 17 bias 8 ply. I read your answer about a 48 truck with the same tires. The rims are 5 lug
8" dia pattern with 4-3/4" between studs. They are split rims.
#1 Are these rims safe after 40 years. #2 I have been told by some tire shops i can use a present day equivalent tire size?
#3 Any links for rim change out? Thank you Barry       Gary

Answer
Gary,

First, my expertise is in the rubber parts, so I can not tell you if the 40 year old rims are safe or not.  I don't think these things go bad, unless they are rusted, but I just do not have the background to declare them "safe".

I also can not tell you about rim change outs.

As I said when I replied to the guy with the 1948 truck, these rims require a tube and a flap - and to the best of my knowledge, modern tires are too small in diameter for the currently available tubes.  So the "some tire shops" are incorrect.

And I did confirm that Coker Tire does indeed have a 7.50-17 10 ply rating, so that will work.

But that's as much information as I can pass on to you.
