Tires: Tire pressure GMC Sierra, gmc sierra, stock wheels

Question
Hello,
I have a 2002 GMC sierra 1500 extended cab that I have recently bought tires for.  I purchased a set of GT Radial adventuro all-terrains. The tires are the stock size with stock wheels.  The sticker on the inside of my door said to set the tire pressure at 50psi all the way around.  I have been running them like this for about 6,000 miles and I feel like the tread is wearing faster than it should (especially in the middle of the tires).  Is there a different psi that I should be running?  Thank you in advance for your help.

Henry

Answer
Henry,

I am going to take a guess that your vehicle placard says the tire size is supposed to be LT245/75R16 at 50 psi - and the tire size stamped on the sidewall says 245/75R16, where there is no letter in front of the tire size.

Another way to tell is to read the sidewall.  If the tire refers to a "Load Range" - and "E" is the most likely load range - or the maximum pressure is 50 psi or more, then that's OK.  But if the tire says "Standard Load" or "Extra Load", and the pressure is less than 50 psi, then that would not be OK.

If what I suspect is true, then you have the wrong tires for your vehicle.  The tires need to be "LT" type tires - which are quite different than "P" type tires (with either no letters in front of the size or the letter "P" in front.)

But if I am wrong about the tire "size" thing, then I suspect you have gotten a poorly designed tire and will have to live with it.
