Tires: P-rated A/T tires, all terrain tires, resistant compound

Question
Is there anything different about a P-rated all-terrain tire other than the tread? I ask, specifically, because it would seem logical to make the tire extra load, retaining the P-rated application compatibility while adding a little strength for rougher treatement. I seldom see the XL designation on them, though.

Answer
Jeff,

You are right.  There is hardly any difference between all season and all terrain tires except fore the tread - but that is an important difference. All Terrain tires with have a more cut and chip resistant compound, and a tread pattern that is more open , rugged and deep.

Remember that "All Season" means street usage, and "All Terrain" means some off road usage, where "On / off Road" means about 50 / 50.  All Terrain tires are supposed to be primarily for the street so beefing up the casing would not make a lot of sense.
