Tires: Tire size safety, rim width, tire failure

Question
I am wondering what differences I can expect from replacing my 245/75/R16 tires with 265/75/R16 tires. This is on a '92 Suburban 1500 4x4. Are there any safety concerns?

Answer
Arran,

There are a couple of safety concerns:

According to Tire Guides, a 1992 Suburban K1500 originally came with either LT225/75R16's or LT245/75R16's both mounted on 6.5" rims.

1)  You should be sure to replace your tires with "LT's" not "P's".  P metric tires have a lower load carrying capacity, which could result in a load related tire failure, which sometimes has tragic consequences.

2)  265/75R16's - both "P" variety and "LT" variety require a minimum of a 7" rim width.  Using a smaller than specified rim width causes the tire to arch across the tread face, resulting in a vehicle that will tend to follow the ruts and grooves in the road.  The vehicle will feel (and be) unstable.
