Tires: tire inflation, ford f150 4x4, tire placard

Question
I drive a 2008 Ford F150 4x4 super crew cab. Where I live we drive with the tire pressure at @36 per tire. The problem is the side walls. After about 1-1/2 years the side walls go. What should I do? Get 8 or 10 ply tires or are there tires that can handle low pressure over very rough terrain

Answer
Steven,

I need a little more information.

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

Does the tire placard say to inflate the tires to 36 psi?  Are you using the same size as listed on the placard?

Would you describe what happens to the sidewalls?

Do you have a theory of why you are having a sidewall problem and others don't?  Is it the speed you travel?  The roads you drive on?  The loads you carry?

You mentioned rough terrain.  Is it possible that you are experiencing cuts on the sidewall that is letting the air leak out?

Answer those questions and I'll see where that takes us.
