Tires: Different Size Tires, size tires, chevy silverado

Question
I just bought a replacement rim for my 2002 Chevy Silverado 2 wheel drive, and the tire that came with it is a Lt285/75R16. The other tires on my truck are P255/75R16. is it ok to put the wider tire (LT285) on the back with a smaller tire (P255) on the opposite side?

Answer
Darryl,

No, you shouldn't mix different tires on an axle.  In fact, it is not a good idea to mix different tires on a vehicle - unless the vehicle was designed that way - in other words, came from the factory that way.

The more different the tires, the more potential problems.

In your case, these are so radically different, I wouldn't even use this combination at all - even when it's only temporary - as a spare tire would be used.
