Tires: tires, front wheel drive, tires

Question
I heard that on a front wheel drive its better to have tires with more tread in the rear for traction purposes, is this true?

Answer
Joe,

It is true for all types of cars.

The biggest problems occur when the rear loses traction first and the vehicle spins.  Once that happens there is no recovery possible (other than luck).  With the better tires on the rear, the front would lose traction first, but when the vehicle gains traction back when it slows down, the vehicle can now be steered.
