Tires: Duramax tire size to pull 26 trailer, tire placard, gross vehicle weight

Question
We have 245/75/R16 Tires and want to know if they will pull our 26' trailer or do we need to go to a 285 tire?

Answer
Sherry,

It's a little unclear what you are asking, but I suspect you mean that your tow vehicle has 245/75R16's on it and you want to know if that is OK for pulling your trailer.

Every vehicle has a towing capacity that is expressed as a payload limitation and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of the trailer.  If you are within those limitations, then the tire size that originally came on your vehicle is adequate to tow the trailer.

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

One word of caution:  Some trucks use tires with the letters "LT" in front of the tire size - and some trucks use tires with the letter "P" in front of the tire size - and some trucks use tires with the letter "C" after the tire size.  You should not use "P"'s in place of "LT"'s and vice versa.

So find out from the owners manual or the vehicle manufacturer what those towing limitations are.
