Tires: Tractor Tyres, rim widths, rear tyres

Question
Hi I have just bought a vintage American tractor. I need new rear tyres for it the original size is 13/38. However, I am told that these are no longer made, and that I need 13.6/38's. Will these fit the rims Ok and be safe?

Thanks, Tim.

Answer
Tim,

This is going to require some digging on my part.  There are some old files that probably contain the information on tires produced in the 1950's and earlier.  I'll have to find the files and see what is there.

However, there is a tidbit of information that I will need - the width of the rim. Tires can fit on more than one size rim and you'll need to supply that infomation for me to know for sure if the new size will fit properly - unless, by coincidence, both sizes take the same rim widths.

The rim width ought to be stamped on the rim somewhere.  When you have it, post a followup.

Tim,

It took me a while to find it - had to look in books from the 1950's - but it appears that 13-38's were replaced by 14.9-38 - and in fact were dual marked in the 1960's and 1970's.
