Tires: Replacement for OEM Tires, good year wrangler, oem tires

Question
Re: 1997 Geo Tracker - 4-door - 4WD automatic, with manual locking front hubs

The original tires on this vehicle were Good Year Wrangler RT/S P205/75/R15. I bought a replacement set last fall for the rear wheels, but now in attempting to replace the front tires I an told the tire is discontinued and not available in our area.

The Chevrolet Dealership will not recommend a replacement and is suggesting I must match tires on all 4 wheels, thereby forcing me to scrap the 2 new tires as well.

A Tire Re-seller/Dealer is suggesting the Kelly KA Navigator Gold 97S (same size) as a direct replacement for the two old tires.

Your viewpoint would be appreciated, as I am concerned about affecting the drive train/transfer case.

Answer
Wayne,

First, you should never find yourself in a position where you have to replace only 2 tires in a 4WD or and AWD.  Mismatching tires has caused many driveline failures.  I think it is just lucky you haven't expereienced one so far.

But, I'm sorry. I work for a major manufacturer of tires and shouldn’t make brand specific comments.

So replace all 4 and save your drivetrain.
