Tires: 1999 Ford Ranger tires, stock suspension, ford ranger

Question
I have a Ranger 4wd with stock suspension, that has not been altered. It has 245/75R16 tires.  I would like to go to a narrower tire.  I don't carry any weight near load capacity nor do I pull a trailer.  What size smaller tire could I go to using the same rim. Due to the light empty weight, I hope to gain better traction/handling by going smaller.  Or am I going the wrong direction. Any advice?

I'm afraid you have VERY limited choices if you want to maintain the same height tire.  There is a LT225/75R16 that is smaller in diameter and width.  This tire comes in heavier plys which will add some extra weight but, it will make for a stiffer ride.
