I'm not sure what you may be looking at, but it could mean "reproduction" - meaning tires produced out of the original molds, but not necessarily the original tires, so they look period correct, but are made with modern materials.

If you could find where you found this, perhaps I can be more specific.

Thanks.  It was as I suspected.

How to avoid?  These tires will be advertized as authentic reproductions.  You will not confuse them with currently available models as the tire size will be different - and in a lot of cases, using an unusual tire sizing method.
