Tires: Tire Life, Tire Aging

Question
I put 4 General Radials on my 76 Camaro in 1994. The tires have done about 2000 miles total. They still have the small rubber sticklers running around the perimeter of the tire. Car is stored in a garage. I recently picked up a nail, and the repair shop declined to fix the tire due to it's age. So I bought a new tire. Can tires start to disintegrate just by sitting on a car, in the dark and not going anywhere? I suppose one problem could be the belts are compressed in one spot for some time. Any thoughts from the vintage car foks?

Answer
Chris,

Do a quick google and look for tire aging.  You will find many statements that say that rubber degrades over time, and the tires don't have to be in service for this to happen.

Some of the statements will say 6 years is the limit and some will say 10 years is the limit - and clearly 14 years is way over the limit.
