Tires: 99 sat sl2 low profile tires, Repairs, plugs

Question
As you may guess from the subject line, I have a 99 saturn sl2. I bought my car without the stock wheels. The guy I bought it from had low profile tires on it... Well I ended up running over a nail and luckily the tire was still under warranty and supposivley was fixed. However it started leaking air slowly some how and I had to refill it maybe once maybe 5 months after I got it fixed. Then again half a month later, then again 2 weeks later then again every week or so for two weeks and now i filled it two days ago and the tire pressure went from 40 to 10... It's obvious I need a new tire. However I am 19 and my youth urges me to keep the saturn as "cool" as possible so I want low profile tires. The tread is low on the front tires and I haven't checked the back and it's cold outside so won't before I send this to you... ANYWAY my point is: Did they really fix the tire in the first place. Is it worth is to have low profile tires. Where's a decent place to get new ones.
Thank you mucho!

Answer
Ashleigh,

You asked "Did they really fix the tire in the first place."

I hope you realize that I can't look at the tire, not to mention touch it, hear it, etc.  The only thing I can do is go by your description - and it sounds like they didn't fix it.

(Here's where my expertise comes into play)  I'll bet they used a plug to repair this - and if you've read some of my responses on repairs, you'll see that I point out that plugs are temporary repairs - and one of the reasons is that they tend to leak.

Since the front tires are nearly worn out, you should replace the tires - and the recommended practice is to replace all 4.

If your vehicle no longer has the original rims, then you should continue with the low profile - unless you are willing to spend money to go back to the stock setup.

You also asked:  "Where's a decent place to get new ones."

I am familiar with the places around where I live - and some of the reputations of the national chains.  But I don't know where you live, and there may be some national chains where a particular shop is not trustworthy - and I would have no way of knowing that!

So ask around about experiences with tire shops.  You want to find someone who knows tires and can deal with low profile substitutions.

More quotes:  "However I am 19 and my youth urges me to keep the saturn as "cool" as possible so I want low profile tires."  "Is it worth is to have low profile tires".

I am glad you recognize that your youth is driving your desire to be "cool".  As you get older the drive doesn't change, but it's importance does.  You've already encountered the work required to do things right,  (Your quote:  "....and I haven't checked the back and it's cold outside so won't before I send this to you... ") and you will find that it requires a lot of work (and money) to be superficially "cool".  Real "coolness" is either part of who you are (or not), and if putting on low profile tires and rims is what impresses your friends - you need different friends.

I gave that up a long time ago.  I drive old cars and don't care what people think about it.  Let others spend thousands of dollars every year to have "cool" cars.  I took that money and went racing with it.  I was never fast (didn't spend enough money!), but I had a lot of fun.  After I quit racing, I invested that money - and it's quite a nice chunk of change now! I can buy all the cool cars I want - Ferrari's, Lotuses (or is that Lotii?) - but why?  If I ever need to feel "cool", I pull the racecar out of the garage, pop open a beer, and tinker on the engine (and relive the "Glory Days") - and no one else in the neighborhood can do that.
