Tires: Tire Worn Out, passenger car tires, honda xrm

Question
QUESTION: I would like to ask if given the same condition, like same vehicle and same usage, which tire will worn out faster? Using tires with larger diameter or smaller diameter?

ANSWER: Ronaldo,

Unfortunately, you can not have "like" conditions.  There is always something that confounding the issue.

For example:  If I take a P205/75R15 and compare it to a P215/75R15, not only is there a diameter difference, but there is also a load carrying capacity difference.  The load carrying capacity difference will affect the results.

AND

Compared to all the other factors, small differeces in diameter have a negligible difference in wear.  Diameter is just not worthy of consideration, unless the differences are huge - and then you're not talking about an apples to apples comparison.

QUESTION: How about if we are talking a motorcycle wheels. My friend say that larger tire diameter is easily worn out than smaller tire diameter base on his comparison to my yamaha mio who has small diameter wheels to his Honda XRM who has a larger diameter wheel. They both use as in city proper and my mio's mileage is 11 thousand kilometer already and haven't change tire yet while his XRM is only about 10 thousand kilometer mileage and yet change tire once already. My tire is still far from ware off. I just wonder how it happen when I know that smaller tire diameter rotate many times than a larger diameter wheel in a given mileage.

Answer
Ronaldo,

What I said about passenger car tires applies to motorcycle tires as well:  There are just too many variables and many of the variables are confounded with other things to be able to make strong statements about tire wear on larger diameter tires.
