Tires: Steering Wheel Shakes above 60 MPH, shimmy shake, bmw 323is

Question
I drive a 98 BMW 323is, with Goodyear Assurance Tripletreds, and they have about 20K miles on them and treadware is in good shape.  I rotate/balance them every 5K miles and check the tire pressure weekly.

The only problem has been that when steering to the right above 60 mph, there is a shimmy/shake in the steering wheel.  The faster I hit the corner, the worse the shake (almost to the point of being out of control).  These tires have done this since day 1, but the tire dealer re-balances them and assures me that will fix the problem.

Steering straight or left has no problems at any speed.

Answer
Tim,

The tires are ....uh.... well, let call it "out of round".  This is a dimensional problem and there is nothing you can do about it.

If the tires were new, then you could go back to the dealer and demand a new set.  But with 20K, the dealer isn't likely to do that - since it is possible to wear a pattern into the tires - due to misalignment - that will produce the same problem.

I suggest you either live with it or replace the tires - or if you are lucky, get the dealer to do a prorated adjustment for customer satisfaction purposes.
