Tires: wide or narrow for winter tires?, snow traction, brake caliper

Question
I am considering winter tires in the mid-Atlantic area where we get light/moderate snow, plus ice, slush, you name it.  My choices for tire sizes are 235/55-18 and 225/65-17.  What are the trade-offs of the 2 sizes?  I can do either since I'll be getting extra rims. Thanks.

Answer
Rob,

The general theory is that you want to penetrate through the snow and slush to get to the pavement, since pavement will always have much higher traction than ice or snow.  So you want to use higher inflation pressures (smaller, more concentrated, footprint) and narrow - if you have a choice.

I am hoping that you realize that you have picked 2 tire sizes that have different diameter rims - and that the rims must be compatible with the tire.  Not to mention the fitment on the vehicle. - the rims must clear the brake caliper.

Directionally, the 225/65R17 will ride better, give better fuel economy, and better wet and snow traction.  However, directionally,  they won't handle as crisply.

HOWEVER, these and the other properties can be overwhelmed by the choice of tire.  So you may experience some reversals simply by the tire you happen to choose.
