Tires: BMW Tire Size, 2000 bmw 323ci, bmw 323ci

Question
I have a 2000 BMW 323ci, with the sport package on it and 17" wheels. When I bought the car used I had 225/45 type z tires and replaced with 225/45 91H tires. I have decided to replace the type H again with a similar type H tire. I was told I must replace with either v, z or w type tires, is this true? I use the car for a family vehicle and do not ever exceed 95MPH.

Answer
Jim,

The general recommendation is to stay with the original tire type as came on the car - and this includes speed rating.  The reason for this is that not only is the speed capability an issue, but the handling is also somewhat tied to the speed rating.

BMW decided they needed tires with high handling - and that's at least one of the reasons they specified Z rated tires.

Now if you are satisified with the handling of the H rated tires - fine.  But be aware that many tire dealers feel especially vulnerable if they don't follow the vehicle specification - and they have a point.
