Tires: Tire wear, chrysler town and country, eccentric bolt

Question
Why do my tires wear out only on the outer side.  I have a 1999 Chrysler Town and Country with 104000 miles.  I had my alignment fixed a few times already but it keeps wearing on the outer side.

Answer
Barry,

There are a couple of things it could be.

1)  May be the alignment guy isn't doing as good of a job as he might be.  Alignment tolerances are pretty wide and if any of the settings are on the outer half, it could still be a problem.  Plus, many alignment guys think that if there isn't a provision to adjust an alignment setting, you can't do it. WRONG!!  They are just being lazy.  Every alignment setting can be adjusted, but sometimes it requires slotting a hole or using an eccentric bolt.

2)  The way you drive may be unusual.  Most vehicles are set up to drive on open highways.  If you do most of your driving in the city - that is there are a lot of turns compared to the distance you drive - then the tire will tuck under in cornering and tend to wear the outer shoulder.

If you drive aggressively, you can get the same effect.

3)  It could be that you have some components that are worn and the allow the tire to oscillate slightly.
