Tires: tire size, tire failure, load index

Question
My 2003 Safari (2WD) came with 215/70R16.  I need to replace them.  Can I use 215/65R16?  What would the effect be?  I'm guessing a slight difference in the spedo reading and a very small difference in ride height.

Answer
Fraser,

This is not a good idea.  The tire size you are looking at is smaller in load carrying capacity and therefore, this is less safe - It increases your risk of a tire failure.

I realize that the size you are looking for is unusual and you'd like more options.  You need to find a tire that is at least a 99 Load index, but the original tire size is probably the most popular in the size range you are looking for.
