Tires: LT vs P tires for towing, rough patches, ball joints

Question
Barry

I am at a stage where I need to replace the tires on my 1/2 ton.  I have been told by some sources that I should buy LT tires (as I tow a travel trailer occasionally in the summer) and they are suppose to help with the stability and sway of the truck while I am towing.  I have also been warned by other sources that I should stick with P tires, as they came originally on the truck, and the LT tires may make the ride too harsh and be tough on the axles, suspension, ball joints, etc.

The tires also need to be decent in the winter and although I am not a heavy offroader, my truck definitly does not stay on the hardtop 100% of the time.  So far with the "P's" the truck has been decent on gravel and dirt (w/o the trailer), but the back end does shimmy regularly on washboard and rough patches.

I was hoping I could get your opinion on the matter

Thanks
Allan

Answer
Allan,

I am of the opinion that the folks that would know what's best for towing would be the vehicle manuafcturer - and if you stay within the guidelines they publish, you will be fine - and that includes the tires.

Also, I do not recommend that vehicles change type of tires - If it came with "P", stay with "P" - If it came with "LT", stay with "LT".
