Tires: Diesel Ford Excursion - D or E load?, diesel excursion, ford excursion

Question
I've just replaced tires on my 03 4x4 Ford Excursion 6.0L PSD.  I went a bit larger than OEM - installed BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO 285/75/16, D load rating (OEMs were 265s, D rated).  They seem a little soft - handling is definitely looser than with the OEM's.  It got a little better when I maxed them out to 65psi, but they're still a little squirrely.  I'm concerned once I add a travel trailer the handling may get worse, and I'm looking at lots of towing in the Mtns out west. Wondering if I'm just overreacting and part of the problem is I now have all that meaty tread that I haven't had for 3yrs, or should I should go with "E's" - I have 30 days if I want to swap the tires out and BFG does make the same tire in an E. Do you feel the diesel Excursion would be better served with the 10 plys?

Answer
Alex,

I don't think the problem you are encountering has to do with the pressure or the Load Range.  I suspect the problem is that the tire just is a bit too soft - for ride comfort reasons.

I think you should try a different brand of tire.  But be prepared for the ride to be less comfortable.
