Tires: Tire Size, 2004 bmw 525i, rim width

Question
What, if anything, needs to be considered or done if I want to change from a 225/55 R16v tire (4) set to 245/50 R16w set without changing the 16" wheels on a 2004 bmw 525i?

Answer
Tom,

There are a number of things to consider:

1)  Load Carrying capacity - the original tires have a 95 Load Index and even the smallest Load Indices for 245/50R16's are above that.

2)  Rim width - The original rim was 7" wide and a P245/50R16 requires a minimum of a 7", so while that isn't the greatest for handling and wear - it should be acceptable.

3)  Clearance - That's the one thing I can not tell you about, because the folks that measure the fenderwells think it gives them a competitive advantage, so they don't share.  I suggest you contact Tire Rack or Discount Tire, both of whom do these types of measurements.
