Tires: tire pressure, stock tires, max pressure

the stock tires on my 01 vr6 jetta had a max pressure of 44psi. vw recommends 28psi in the front and 26psi in the rear.  the tires that i have on the the car have a max psi rating of 51. what should i set my front and rear tire psi too.

If you are using the same size as listed on the vehicle placard, then the pressure listed there is appropriate regardless of what the maximum pressure is listed on the sidewall.

However, if you are using a different size, then the pressure has to be recalculated.  Again it has nothing to do with the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall.
