Tires: directional tires, race car driver, directional tires

Question
My used car has p-185-60r-15, the same tire that is called for on the door plate, they were mounted on the rims we'll call with (1) side out on two of the tires, and the other two with (2) side out, they have no arrow that I can see on the tire, but if you look at the tread, two of them look like the water would not drain out from under the tire and would hyroplane as well as wear up early, do I need to have those two turned around and remounted? Jim

Answer
Jim,

ALL - let me say that again - ALL directional tires have an arrow.  If it doesn't have an arrow, it isn't directional.

Let me also say the same thing about assymetrical tires - they will say "This Side Out" or words to that effect.

But to try to explain further, there are tires that "look" like they are directional, just so they look cool.  The actual performance improvements for a directional tire is relatively small and you'd have to be a highly skilled driver to detect the difference - we're talking race car driver skill level.

And some of the designs don't actually have the details to make the directionality work.

So unless there is an arrow, there is no need to worry.
