Tires: load range for pulling cargo trailer, tire failure, cargo trailer

Question
Hello, I just purchased a GMC 1500HD crew cab truck to pull my 7x16' cargo trailer for work. I pull the trailer everyday and would guess the trailer weight to be ~6,000 lbs. loaded. I bought the truck used and the tires on it are load range C. I know the vehicle originally came equipped with LR E tires. Do you recommend tires with a higher load range for my application, and if so, how urgent is a change needed? Thanks much for your advice!

Answer
Chris,

Your first step should be to contact the vehicle manufacturer and find out what the towing limitations are.  If you are within those limitations, than the tire information that is on the placard is appropriate.

My guess is that you should immediately replace the tires you have currently have with Load Range E's.  An overloaded tire failure can have tragic results.
