Tires: directional tires, directional tires, snow traction

Question
first of all im glad to have found this site where i can ask a Q !! ok--i just bought a a car that has likenew directional tires on it. we had our first snow this evening and my car felt like it was sliding off the road although when i hit the brakes--(intentionally --to test the grip)--there seemed to be no problem there...again --continuing down the road on snow..the car began a wobbly sliding feel--very scary by the way..to sum it up--it felt like all the lugs was loose and all the tires were weaving around. it was very scary and i drove at 20 mph all the way home becuz of it--people were passing me like i wasnt moving at all. ever heard of this problem with directional tires? are they ok for snow/ice?

Answer
Chery,

Directional tires don't have this problem any more than some all season tires do.  It has everything to do with snow traction capability and not the directionality.

If you want better snow traction, you need new tires.  Perhaps it is just that the tires have plenty of wear.  As tires wear, their snow traction capability, as well as their wet traction capability, decreases, especially as they get close to wearout.

Talk to a tire dealer and have him see if this is the problem.
