Tires: Matching Rim and Tire Widths, proper inflation pressure, 9 rims

Question
What is the acceptable tire width that can be mounted on 9" wide and 10" wide rims.  For example: 9" rims can handle tire widths of 225 through 245".  And in this case would the optimum size be 235?

Answer
Larry,

You have to be careful coming from that direction.  The proper way to look at it is:  What load capacity do I need in my tires, what tire sizes have that capacity, and what rim widths do these tire sizes need?

And the starting point for this is the original tire size - and you can find that on the vehicle placard which is usually located on a doorpost or in the glovebox, along with the proper inflation pressure for that size.

So if you will look that up and post back, I can assist you in selecting a tire size that both fits your rims and can safely handle the load your vehicle is going to put on the tire.

Once you get the load capacity issue figured out you need the the help of a tire calculator:

This will assist you with the allowable rim widths by tire size.  Unfortunately, the rim width / tire width relationship is complex and not easily stated.

Post back with the placard info and I'll guide you through the next steps.
