Tires: land cruiser tires, toyota land cruiser, inflation pressures

I have a 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser, used for hunting, off-roading (on trails and dirt roads) and for family travel.  Two years ago I needed tires and allowed the costco folks to replace the stock 275/70 16's with HR rated Michelins (which were the stock tire)  They are lousy off road tires and are trashed at 20K miles.  Too soft for a 5200 lb vehicle.  What would you think of going to a 285/75 16 LT tire?

The size is going to be less important than the type of tire you get.  I don't see any particular problems using a different size so long as you get enough load carrying capacity and they fit on the rims (you have 8" wide rims), but I would stay away from LT tires because they require higher inflation pressures that P metrics.  Higher pressure are counter productive for your use.
