Tires: snow tires, wheel drive cars, front wheel drive cars

Question
I have been told that it is not a good idea to put snows on only the front axle of front wheel drive cars . Is this true? Thanks, Tony Arnold

Answer
Tony,

That is true.  While having winter tires on the front is good for starting, if the rear tires break loose, which could happen on cornering or heavy braking, then the rear end will come around, and on a FWD, this is extremely difficult to recover from.  It's best to have all 4 tires the same.
