Tires: 2001 gmc, 17 inch rims, split rims

Question
Hi, ths time I was able to get your answer thank you.  You didn't answer all of my questions though-----gas mileage and better in the snow or not and one extra one  what will it do to my computer or ABS system.  I looked at my rim and it says 6.5 though and not 7.

-----Question-----
I have 245/75R16s (recommended size)on my 2500HD 4wheel drive. It has 4:10 gears. I was just wondering if it would be O.K to put on 235/85 R16 tires on it. I was hoping that that the narrower tires will help in the snow and I would like to be an inch taller because I want to put a plow on it one day. Will the taller tires help in gas mileage?  Or should I buy 17 inch rims and put 245/75 R17s tires on them?  I read on your site that you have to have all the same size rims on a 4x4.  One last question:  Will my 2001 rims fit my 1966 GMC 3/4 ton (they are 8 hole)?  They look the same, but are they and what about the offset?  They currently have the worthless split rims.
-----Answer-----
As far as load capacity and rim width goes (your truck has 7" rims), this is an acceptable change.  But I don't about how much room there is under the fenderwell (probably plenty), so I suggest you find a web site devoted to your vehicle and ask there, Someone has probably already done this.

As far as 17" goes - be sure you get enough load capacity and that means an "LT" tire, not a "P".

I'm not sure the rims from your 2001 will fit - rims are really outside my area of expertise.

Answer
Paul,

Gas mileage - better, but you'll experience a slight sluggishness in acceleration.

ABS?  Sorry, this is a vehicle specific sort of thing so you'll have to ask the vehicle manufacturer.

Better in snow - probably, but this has a lot to do with the particular tread pattern and the size change is not enough to say definitively.

And the 6 1/2" rims - opps! looked on the wrong line.
