Tires: wheel sizes, low profile tires, chrysler models

Within the last few years there has been a trend towards larger wheels - for example several Chrysler models.  Also many sporty types have low profile tires (thin tires on large rims). Are these merely cosmetic changes or are they functional?

Larger rims means you can fit larger brakes - and that is a real plus!!!

But larger rims / lower profile tires also means better handling with some sacrifice in ride.  However, shock technology has really improved and the ride quality hasn't suffered much.
