Tires: new tire question, dunlop sp2000e, tire molds

Question
Barry,

I just bought a new set of Dunlop SP2000E 235 and 255 Z rated tires oline from a big tire dealer. When I got the tires they appeared to have been used (albeit slightly) and there is not much thin rubbery protrusions or pointed protrusions (sorry - don't know what you call those things)on the tread of the tire. Are these tires ok...or have I been had?

Thank very much for your help.

Answer
Curtis,

Those are called "vents", and it is common to have special provisions in tire molds that eliminate most of the protrusions.  So perhaps they are brand new, but the way to tell is - are the markings on the tread distinct and sharp (new) or are they rounded and smoothed out (worn).
