Tires: load ranges, inflation pressure, doorpost

Question
im not sure exactly what the specific load ranges ie a,b,c,d,e for tires stands for and i havent been able to find any one to give me an acurate answer, because i have a 05 2500hd that i was thinking about putting 285/75/r16 load d tires and i didnt know if that would be the right tire for my truck.

Answer
Pete,

Sizing tires is a bit more complex than just Load Range.

But the first step is to find out what tire size and inflation pressure came originally on your truck.  This information will be on the vehicle placard which is usually on the doorpost or in the glove box.

I have a book that summarizes the placard info, but I need the year, make, and model, and all you gave me was the year and model.  I'm guessing a Dodge, but GM refers to its trucks as 2500's also.  Plus trucks are problematic as there are so many different configurations (reg cab, crew cab, etc.) and the tire sizes and pressures can be different.

So let's start with the info on the placard.  be sure to include the letters.  "LT" and "P" have meaning and are important to get tires with the right load capacity.
