Tires: New Tire Noise, snow tires, season tires

Question
I have recently purchaed a 1997 BMW 528i.  The tires that were on the car were snow tires and made a lot of noise - a steady hum.  I had the tires replaced with new all weather tires to the exact specs recomended 222/60R-15 96H.  I was hoping the loud noise of the tires would go away but it has not.  The new tires seem just as loud.  Is this a function of the car (the tires were balanced upon instillation)or is it the wrong tires?  Thanks for the advice.

Answer
Steven,

Let me see if I have this right.  The snow tires were too noisy, so you replaced them with all season tires and they are still too noisy.  This leads me to think that tires aren't the problem.  That leaves 3 possibilties:  1)  The road surface is just naturally noisy,  2)  The vehicle is transmitting a lot of noise,  3)  your expectations are out of line.

The only way to sort this out is to listen to the noise itself - which I personally can't do.  So I suggest you have a friend drive the car.  Don't tell him what the problem is and see if he comments about the noise without prompting.  If he does, then we can rule out #3.  Also, maybe being a passenger will give you the opportunity to listen with the window down and see if it truly is the car or the tires or the road surface.
