Tires: flat tire, goodyear wrangler, thread depth

Question
I have a 2001 jeep with 30000 miles. It has all time 4 wheel drive. I had a blow out on one tire. The spare is brand new. Can I put one new tire with 3 origional tires. I have been told that i could have problems with the transfer case due to the difference in thread depth? If not,
should I purchase 3 new tires  and use the new spare as my 4 th. I have goodyear wrangler sr a  on the jeep now. How does that compare to other tires on the market.

Answer
Rudy,

The real problem is the overall diameter of the tire.  Anytime you have tires of different diameters, you risk the differentials wearing, and in the case of 4X4's and AWD's, the center transfer case as well.  So you have some choices:

1)  Put on one tire that is different and risk a pull or risk wear on the differential and transfer case.

2)  Put on a pair of new tires and risk wear in the transfer case, which can avoid completely by NEVER shifting into 4WD.

3)  Put on 4 new tires.

As far as the Wrangler SRA - well - you didn't tell me what you expect out of a tire, so I can tell you how well it will meet those expectations.  Besides, I work for a major tire manufacturer and it just wouldn't be right for me to make such comments.
