Tires: load range D vs. E, stock tires, f250 4x4

Question
I have an 05 f250 4x4 the stock tires are 265/70/17 load E . I  want to put bigger tires on it maby 315/70/17 load D . The truck is used to tow a trailer "7000lbs" about 200 miles per day everyday. Can I get by with this tire change.

Answer
Nicki,

In all likelihood, no!  The problem is the width of your rims.  An LT315/70R17 requires a minimum rim width of 8 1/2" - 9 preferred.  Your F250 came with 7 1/2", and unless you change wheels there isn't enough width.

While the tire can physically mount on the wheel, the narrow rim will make the tire "arch" across the tread, which tends to make the tire sensitive to road imperfections.  Put another way, the vehicle will "wander".  This is especially critical when towing a trailer.

Hope this helps.
