Tires: Mixing tires brands, directional tires, quality tire

Question
I have an 05 Yukon with P28550R20 Hankook directional tires. They track and seem to follow every crack in the road. Since I have only 10k miles on them, I was wondering if I could replace the front tires with a good quality tire of the same size and rating. I would then rotate side to side rather than the normal way. I'd like to get my moneys worth with the old tires and could change out the back when they wear out with the two I took off the front.

Answer
Bob,

Obviously the best situation is to have 4 relatively new tires of the same size and design.

But what you're asking about is some assurance that you can be safe while trying to avoid spending money on tires.

Sorry, I can't give you that assurance as it might be OK, but it might not.  You've got an SUV and as you are aware, SUV's are more prone to tipping over than cars are.  You've also made the situation worse by putting low aspect ratio tires on.

If the front tires are more responsive to steering inputs, then the vehicle could develop oversteer and go into a spin, and that is the situation where rollovers take place.

If the front tires are less responsive, then the vehicle could develop more understeer - which is a much safer and easier to control.

Hope this helps.
