Tires: Tires, underinflated tires, steel belts

Question
Hi Barry:

I have a 2005 Honda Civic with P195 65 R14 Michelin Destinys.  I had a screw (1/8 - 3/16" Dia)go through the tread.  The tire was removed, patched from the inside, and rebalanced by a Certified Goodyear Repair Shop.  Should I have any concerns when it is time to rotate that tire to the front of my car?

Thank you.

Answer
Frank,

Hopefully, the tire was repaired according to standards, which means a plug/patch combination.  If it wasn't done this way, contaminants may get into the steel belts and cause corrosion, and eventual belt to belt separation.

The one bit of information you didn't tell me is was how long the tire was underinlated, and how much.  These 2 items are crucial as underinflated tires have an increased risk of failure, and therefore so do repaired tires.  Obviously a tire that is completely flat would be the worst case.  But as a general rule repaired tires do fairly well and there should be little concern.

Just be aware if you ever get a vibration that gradually gets worse.  This might be a separation developing.  Takes several hundred miles to go from detectable to the tread coming off.

Hope this helps.
