Tires: Lug bolts on utility trailer, lug bolt, hub assembly

Question
Hello, I have a problem with the lug bolts on my utility trailer.  It was replacing the wheels when the lug bolt came loose.  They had not been replaced in a long time and were rusted.  So I was putting a lot of torque on the nuts to remove them.  There are no brakes on the wheel assembly and I can see the other side of the lug bolt turn now.

Is this something that can be fixed?  Or, should I replace the whole hub assembly?

Thanks,
Jeff

Answer
Jeff,

Of course it can be fixed!  The question is how difficult will it be.

If I understand this correctly, you now have the wheel stuck on the hub and the lug bolts can't be loosened unless the hub is taken off.

The easiest thing to do is try to drill the lug bolt out and see if you can find a lug bolt that will fit in the hole that's now been created.  (I'll bet you won't find one.)

Another option would be to weld the lug bolt.

BTW, I recommend you use an pneumatic impact wrench to get the rest of the other nuts loose.  May be a little penetrating oil soaked over a week's time might help, too!!
