Tires: TRX package, tire and rim package, rims and tires

Question
Hello,
I have an 82 mustang Gt with the TRX package, which doesn't mean much. Just a suspension and some aluminum composite rims that are metric. The tires it takes are 220 55R 390 and let me tell you, they are sooo expensive. 140 bucks each. What alternatives can I use for this car instead of buying those tires, which don't last very long anyway. I bought 2 new ones a few years ago and they are already weatherchecked and cracked on the sidewalls, just like the old ones that were on it before. This car only gets driven in the summer. I bought it at 88K and now it has just turned 100K, so the tires just arent worth it. I bought them at Sam's club and although they look nice, the price and lastibility stinks. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Hello, MJ
The TRX package was Michelins 1st attempt to gain market share in the US with a High Performance tire and rim package. Leave it to them to come up with a metric rim that no one else wants. Most people who bought these mustangs replaced the rims and tires after the metric ones wore out. It was cheaper to by new rims and tires than the tires themselves. I think a 390 metric is close to a 15" tire. But I'm not sure. Most any tire place could give you a good replacement tire with a 15" or 16" rim.
