Tires: snow tires, snow tires, drive axle

I have heard that snow tires are the single best investment for winter driving.  Would you agree?  Do you recommend and brand?  If only two tires would you use on front or back wheels?

Best winter investment? - Absolutely!  (Depending on where you live)

Brand? - Sorry, I work for a major tire manufacturer and it just wouldn't be right for me to make a recommendation.

Where to put 2?  Official answer is only 4.  But if you're willing to put up with the less than half hearted improvment snow tires can give, then put them on the drive axle.  But be aware that this hampers your vehicle's handling characteristics.  So drive very very cautiously.
