I have a Mazda mx-6 1990 my tire size is 205/65/r15 the problem is the car shakes when I am on the highway accelerating. The wheels are not the originals, I have aluminum rims by "Enkie" on there. I am having struts and new tires added in the next two weeks. Will that stop it or should I have an 4-wheel alignment done? I had an accident some years back and the complete front end was replaced, I'm not sure if the auto repair shop did an alignment. Any feedback you can provide. Thanks for anything Jay

Jay,

Diagnosing vibrations is difficult even if with the vehicle is standing right in front you.  And given all the possibilities you've got, it's nearly impossible.

But I need more info.

How many miles on the tires?
When did it start vibrating?
Is it getting worse?
Did you buy the wheels yourself or did they come on the car?
Does it only shake on acceleration?
Does it shake on braking or at a steady speed?
Is the shaking in the steering column or in the seat?  (or somwhere else?)

the tires have about 10,000 miles on them the vibrations started about a little over year ago, it's not getting worse but it's bad enough. I brought the wheels myself from a rim shop and the tires from BJ's wholesale club BF Goodrich Touring. I get the shake only on acceleration, and the shaking comes from the steering column.  Thanks

Answer
Jay,

I think you have a problem with the CV joints.  The clue was that it occurred only on acceleration.  Wheel end vibrations will be there in all conditions - braking, accelerating, steady speed, etc.  Your previous accident might be the cause, but it might also be the CV joints just have reached the end of their useful life.

Hope this helps.
