Tires: tires, brake caliper, couger

Question
I have a 1984 couger that has 220/55 r 390 tires on it. I am having a hard time finding that size, could you recomend another size so i will not have to change rims to get new tires for the car.Or a company that still makes and sells that size.  THANK YOU for your time.

Answer
Jeff,

You have the TRX problem.

In the mid 80's Michelin convinced a lot of vehicle manufacturers that they had the answer to their tire problems - an all metric sizing system that gave better tire to wheel sealing and allowed for a slightly larger brake caliper.

However, this was a solution to a problem that didn't exist.  It didn't take very long for everyone to realize this was not a better way to do things.  Besides, Michelin was pretty close to the only manufacturer for the tires and not everyone want to pay the price.

The size was discontinued many years ago.

But I did find the tires for you at Coker tire.

They are Michelin Vintage Racing tires and they are $323.00 each.  OUCH!

Another thing to try is to change wheels to 15".  Try a Mustang or a Thunderbird of the same era.  I'll bet other Fords will also have the proper offset.  There is some question about whether the brakes will clear the wheels, so a trial fit is in order.  You want to get 6 1/2or 7" wide wheels and you want to use P225/60R15 tires.

Hope this helps.
